Marie Skłodowska Curie

1867-11-071934-07-04
"She came to Paris with nothing but her mind, and it was enough."

Marie Skłodowska was twenty-four years old when she left Warsaw for Paris with a single suitcase and a hunger for knowledge that her homeland, under Russian occupation, refused to feed. She arrived at the Sorbonne nearly broke, studying in an unheated garret, surviving on chocolate and bread. What she built from that starting point is almost too large to hold: two Nobel Prizes in two different sciences, the discovery of polonium and radium, and a framework for understanding radioactivity that reshaped physics and medicine alike. She ran field X-ray units during World War I, personally driving them to the front. She refused patents on her discoveries, insisting they belong to the world. The radiation that made her famous also killed her, though she never stopped working. She did not ask for easy. She asked for true.
