Loretta Mae Gibson

"A heart that nurtured all."

Loretta Mae Gibson was the cornerstone of our family, a woman whose warmth could light up the darkest days. Born in rural Mississippi, she grew up tending to her family’s small farm, learning early the value of hard work and kindness. She married young, at 19, to our dad, Henry, and together they built a life in Birmingham, Alabama, raising four children with a blend of strict love and endless patience. She was a seamstress by trade, working late into the night to make ends meet, but her real gift was making everyone feel seen -- a neighbor, a stranger, even a child having a rough day. Mama Loretta had a laugh that filled a room, deep and rolling, and she’d use it often while cooking Sunday dinners of fried chicken and collard greens that brought the whole extended family together. Her hands were always busy, whether she was quilting blankets for newborns in the church or tending her small backyard garden of roses and marigolds. She had a saying, ‘A little dirt under your nails means you’ve lived,’ and she lived by it, teaching us to appreciate the simple beauty of growing things. She was a pillar in her community, volunteering at the local library to read to kids and organizing clothing drives for families in need. Her faith was her compass -- she sang in the church choir for over 40 years, her voice a steady alto that lifted everyone’s spirits. Even in her later years, when arthritis slowed her down, she’d sit on her porch swing, sipping sweet tea and waving to every passerby with a smile that said, ‘You matter.’ Losing her just before the new year felt like the world dimmed a little. We miss her stories of the old days, her gentle scolding when we forgot to call, and the way she’d pray over us like we were her greatest treasure. But her lessons of love, resilience, and generosity live on in each of us. Rest in peace, Mama. We’ll carry your light forward, knowing you’re watching over us with that same sweet smile.
