The Bell Rang for the Last Time
Alma Rodriguez
March 27, 2026 • El Paso, TX

After thirty-eight years teaching fourth grade in El Paso, Alma Rodriguez packed the last stack of spelling quizzes, erased the whiteboard one final time, and was met in the hallway by former students now old enough to bring their own children. The surprise sendoff stretched from the classroom to the parking lot, complete with handmade signs, mariachi, and more tears than Alma was willing to admit in public. She taught generations of families to read with confidence, multiply without fear, and apologize properly when they were being little punks. Retirement, in Alma’s case, looks less like slowing down and more like finally having time for the vegetable garden, the grandkids, and the novels she spent years recommending to everybody else.
