Attorney Guide
Resources for using EverstoneBTC for timestamping documents and managing encrypted wills.
Overview
EverstoneBTC provides two key services for attorneys: permanent timestamping of documents on the Bitcoin blockchain and management of encrypted wills with a dead man's switch mechanism. This guide covers how to get started with both.
- Timestamping API: Prove the existence and integrity of contracts, agreements, or client documents at a specific point in time.
- Encrypted Wills: Securely store wills with periodic check-ins, automatically notifying beneficiaries if check-ins are missed.
Timestamping API
Timestamping with EverstoneBTC creates an unalterable record of a document's existence at a specific time. This is useful for contracts, intellectual property, legal agreements, and more.
How it works:
- Register for an API key through the Attorney Portal.
- Submit a document hash (SHA-256) via our API endpoint.
- The hash is anchored to the Bitcoin blockchain, creating a permanent timestamp.
- Receive a Transaction ID (TXID) as proof, verifiable on any Bitcoin block explorer like mempool.space.
Why use Bitcoin for timestamping?
- Permanence: Bitcoin's blockchain is maintained by thousands of nodes worldwide, ensuring the record survives any single entity's failure.
- Immutability: Once recorded, the data cannot be altered, providing strong legal evidence.
- Privacy: Only a hash is recorded, not the document itself, preserving client confidentiality.
Encrypted Wills & Dead Man's Switch
EverstoneBTC offers a secure solution for managing encrypted wills, ensuring they are delivered to beneficiaries only under specific conditions, such as missed check-ins.
How it works:
- Upload an encrypted will file (you hold one key, we hold a partial key).
- Set a check-in schedule (e.g., monthly) and provide beneficiary email addresses.
- If check-ins are missed for the specified period, beneficiaries are notified with instructions to retrieve the will.
- Bitcoin anchoring ensures proof of the will's existence and integrity.
Key benefits:
- Security: Wills are encrypted; even we can't access the contents without your key share.
- Reliability: Automated notifications ensure timely delivery without manual intervention.
- Proof: Bitcoin timestamping proves the will existed at a specific time, reducing dispute risks.
Manage encrypted wills directly through the Attorney Portal dashboard after registration.
